Sedem

What I find most valuable about this book is how it lays down the true realities of what it takes to get into and succeed in medical school and more so what it truly means to work as a physician. I love that while unveiling the challenges that no one wants to talk about, the author accompanies them with her own experiences and how she overcame those challenges. It’s candid and relatable and I think that’s what makes this guide unique and effective.

Dr. Kelly, Family Medicine

I wish I had this book!!! This book is absolutely needed. The capter on challenges transcends medical school and is applicable to life! I wish I had this kind of advice when I was in high school.

Priscilla Gutiérrez

The PreMed Survival Guide provides tangible tips to goal achievement that transcend medical careers. I appreciated the inclusion of self-care and self-esteem advice. Dr. Hagos balanced personal anecdotes, statistics, and pro-tips in each chapter. This guide would have been so useful to me in college and law school! Regardless of your career choice, the wisdom shared in this guide will help you define a clear path to your personal definition of success. It's like having a friend and mentor on your phone giving you honest, solid guidance whenever you need to hear it. I highly recommend this guide, especially for Black and Brown students.

Dr. Seyoum, Endocrinologist

This is a great book. It really helps medical students to deal with the stresses of going through medical school. Mana has made the journey of learning medicine very easy and simple. I strongly suggest that all medical students should use this book.

Samson

This book was primarily written by Dr. Hagos for those who want to become doctors but I found it to be an invaluable resource for anyone who want to succeed in any field; highly recommended.

Dr. Barnett, Endocrinology

This is a great resource! Dr. Hagos illuminates the path to and through medical training for pre-meds from both a big picture and detailed perspective.

Dr. Liu, Neurology

This is a book that transforms your limiting beliefs by putting you back in charge of the goals you strive for through series of actionable steps, beginning with setting the right mindset. This will hep shape many aspiring students' lives.

My hope is that one day, more minority clinicians around the world will have the wherewithal within their profession to take a step back, reflect on their journey, and provide exceptionally valuable resources like The PreMed Survival Guide, in order uplift and inspire minorities in the same communities they came from. I am currently a student registered nurse anesthetist in training, and though I have no intentions of becoming a Doctor, there were many examples presented in this book that I could relate to. What I really appreciate about this survival guide is that it provides many workable solutions to problems faced by minorities in their upbringing, educational journey, traineeship, and even terminal careers. I highly recommend this book to any educator that may be looking learn more about what the plight of minorities they teach may be like, as well as to any (prospective) minority student looking to find motivation to stay strong, keep their head up, and continue pushing forward.

I purchased the “Premed Survival Guide” for my daughter who is on PreMed track. She was very inspired by your story and found your book extremely helpful. She already implemented some of your guidance and decided to take some of the hard classes during the summer to keep her GPA high. Thank you so much!

Why Did You Write This Book?

    Short answer:

As a first-generation Eritrean immigrant and physician, I wished I had a blueprint for success to guide me through the challenges of being a premedical student, a medical student, and beyond; one, that would coach me through adversity AND provide actionable advice. So, I created that blueprint. No generic “study harder” or “work harder” will be found within The PreMed Survival Guide. Only relevant topics, genuine stories, and hard-hitting facts. I wrote this guide with first-generation African/Black physicians in mind, especially those that are immigrants. The ambitious go-getter who wants to save themselves some trouble before their MCAT/graduating college/or going through medical school will love this book just like many others have!

    Product Description

Suddenly, I got up and ran to the bathroom. Making that the third trip before my first medical school interview. All I had was water, anxiety, and determination in my system. I had looked all over the internet for tips on how to get prepared for interviews, however, I was nervous.

Looking back, I know that preparing for interviews on my own made the experience more stressful than it had to be. With The PreMed Survival Guide: How to Get Your Mindset Right, hopeful students can reduce their anxiety and increase their confidence knowing that they don’t have to scramble to get the most valuable information; they’ll receive accurate, relevant, and up-to-date material from the comfort of their phone or computer.

Can this book guarantee acceptance into medical school or ensure a stellar academic performance? Can any book guarantee that? Probably not. What it will do, is provide an honest and practical approach to common challenges premeds will face on their journeys to become doctors.

    Product Description

I was nervous the first time I had to stop a patient’s heart. The patient needed brain surgery (neurosurgery) and there was a small possibility that, for the patient’s safety, the heart may need to be stopped for a few seconds to allow the surgeon to save the patient’s life. So, I had to find out what dose of a special medication was needed to achieve that goal before the surgery started so, if it was necessary, when needed, the right dose was given. I prepared the back-up emergency medications, nurses brought in emergency equipment, and my supervisor advised and helped me as we talked through the possible scenarios. The whole operating room waited quietly, ready to spring into action if needed. After triple checking that everything was in place, we started the procedure but, the dosing we’d prepared wasn’t enough! We’d prepared for this scenario, so we adjusted without complication. Everything worked out. The patient’s heart stopped for a few seconds then restarted without issue. We didn’t need the emergency medications or equipment. The surgery commenced and several hours later was completed without any issues.

If the opportunity to practice something you’ve read is available, take it. Working out potential problems, identifying strategies, and goal setting are better learned through practice in addition to reading or listening.
