Why Did You Write This Book?

Short Answer:
As a first-generation Eritrean immigrant and physician, I wished I had a blueprint for success to guide me through the challenges of being a premedical student, a medical student, and beyond; one, that would coach me through adversity AND provide actionable advice. So, I created that blueprint. No generic “study harder” or “work harder” will be found within The PreMed Survival Guide. Only relevant topics, genuine stories, and hard-hitting facts. I wrote this guide with first-generation African/Black physicians in mind, especially those that are immigrants. The ambitious go-getter who wants to save themselves some trouble before their MCAT/graduating college/or going through medical school will love this book just like many others have!

How to Practice Mindful Eating; A Stress Management Technique

Stress is an unavoidable human response that is perceived when there is an imbalance between the demands placed upon us and our ability to meet such demands, which can lead to ill-health when not properly managed1.

In young people in particular, this is most commonly as a result of academic stress as they struggle with the challenges of meeting expectations. For students who aspire to get into medical school which is typically very competitive, this might be even more intense as excellent grades need to be maintained.

Students respond to stress differently. Some of the symptoms they experience when stressed include1:

  • Decreased sleep quality
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Irritability or crankiness
  • Migraines
  • Lack of concentration
  • Sweaty hands or feet
  • Excessive sleeping
  • Social isolation
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Obsessive or compulsive behaviours

High school or college can bring an entire new level of stress on students especially those looking to scale through the rigorous selection process for medical schools. They may experience fear of failure, tougher academic responsibilities, social pressure, concerns about transitions, and uncertainty about the future2.

It is typical to experience such fears about making good grades occasionally. However, this may generate concerns if such anxieties lead to behavioural changes such as mood swings, altered sleep patterns and poor dietary habits such as;

  •  skipping breakfast
  •  reduced intake of fruits and vegetables
  • excessive snacking
  • late-night binge eating
  • excessive caffeine intake and substance abuse3.

Ironically, these maladaptive behaviours may lead to the following in the short run:4

  • Shorter attention span
  • Reduced learning capacity
  • Poor appetite control
  • Weight gain
  • Decreased motivation
  • Increased tendency of dropping out

The long-term effects of these bad habits if pervasive include:4

  • Hypertension and Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Infertility problems
  • Severe acne
  • Hair loss
  • Altered blood sugar levels
  • Excessive weight gain/loss, etc

Mindful Eating as a form of Stress Management

Mindful eating is simply a conscious act of selecting foods based on their desirable health benefits and consuming them in appropriate portions while steadily savouring each bite one consumes7. It is one of the strategies used to cope with the stress, anxiety, and possible depression that may come with academic study5.

Some of the benefits of mindful eating include:

  • Improves cognitive development.
  • Glucose enhances mental alertness
  • Taking breakfast improves short memory and attention
  • Omega-three fatty acids found in fishes help to boost brain health
  • Natural stimulants in dark chocolate can help improve attentiveness 2.

13 Ways of Practising Mindful Eating to Scale Back Stress

Listed below are some practices to enable you restore your attention and replace automatic thoughts/reactions with more conscious and healthier responses7:

  1. Understand that hunger or satiety triggers may be unreal due to your current psychological state by learning how to discern reality from emotional influence.
  2. Intentionally make each mealtime something to look forward to through your preparation methods.
  3. Engage your five senses in observing colours, smell, sound, texture, and flavours in food preparation and consumption.
  4. Connect deeply with your food and consider the nutritional value it contains, methods of preparation, and possible hygiene precautions taken while preparing the meal.
  5. Know your plate: divide your plate and assign one half to fruits and vegetables, allocate one fourth to carbohydrates and the final fourth to proteins.
  6. Endeavour to eliminate any external distractions while eating such as your television or mobile phone.
  7. Develop the habit of eating slowly and chewing thoroughly.
  8. Develop the habits of eating in silence.
  9. Observe the soothing and therapeutic effects food has on your mood and physical appearance.
  10. Discontinue eating immediately you feel satisfied.
  11. Consciously make healthy food choices in selection and consumption, such as substituting water for soda or fruits for confectioneries, etc.
  12. Study food labels on packages to learn the nutritional information of each food content
  13. Avoid impulse purchases while shopping by considering the health value of each item before adding them to your cart.

Other approaches that may help to cope with academic stress include:6

  • Having adequate sleep
  • Regular exercise
  • Limiting junk and alcohol intake
  • Seeking guidance and counselling if needed

Top 5 Brain Booster Foods For College Students

By: Dr. Manna Hagos
Do you want to improve your performance? You have landed at the right spot my friend!

College time is a stressful period. All our sympathies for the young and enthusiastic individuals who try their best to manage career and personality stress. The stats paint a picture of anxiety and depression leading to a lack of energy in the young fellows. According to ACHA, 75% of students experience “overwhelming anxiety” that needs to be addressed.

So, take a deep breath! Head to the market and get yourself these rejuvenating and brain-boosting snacks.

1. Blueberries

This tasty delicacy from mother nature will enhance the firing of the neurons in your head. You can become the blue-eyed of your teachers by adding some blueberries to the diet.

This very fruit is rich in chemical compounds called “anthocyanins”. Research shows that anthocyanins can lead to substantial improvements in memory, cognition, and energy. You can choose to consume 2 cups of blueberries or use blueberry juice. A study suggests that drinking blueberry juice i.e. 6-9 ml/kg per body weight improves cognitive health.

Glucose delivery to the cells is also augmented by the consumption of blueberries. Therefore, you can rejuvenate your body cells and pump up brain activity by consuming blueberries.

2. Fish

Only the fatty fish is “yay” while others are “nay” when it comes to meliorating memory and pumping energy.

Fish rich in omega-3-fatty acids are filled with therapeutic benefits and energy. This is because the basic structure of the brain and nerve cells is composed of omega-3 fats. Pumping in fatty fish will smoothen and fasten the brain engine, giving you a sharper memory and quicker analyzing skills.

Omega-3 rich fish also solves the problem of memory impairment entailed with sleep deprivation. If you are habitual of staying awake late at night, oblivious of the morning economics class, a little fish to the diet will go a long way.

Salmon, mackerel, light tuna, and cod are some excellent examples of omega-3 rich fish. Any one of these will surely boost your mental performance.  American Heart Association suggests consuming 3.5 ounces of cooked fish daily.

3. Green Veggies

The next up in line is green vegetables. Yes! That might not be the best advice you have heard but believe you me veggies can kickstart your batteries of power. In addition to fighting fatigue, vegetables can effectively boost memory and cognition.

The best vegetables for college students are:

Broccoli

Students who feel that they are forgetful of stuff and amnesia haunt them during exam days should add some broccoli to the daily routine. A study suggests that broccoli sprouts can reduce amnesia and improve brain function.

Spinach

Academic stress can induce memory deficits. Those who suffer from such chronic restraint stress-induced memory deficit must take some spinach regularly.

USDA recommends two to three cups of green vegetables per day for a healthy life.

4. Dark Chocolate

This might be the most liked brain-boosting snack for young college-going men and women. Inside dark chocolate, you can find plenty of flavonoids and antioxidants.

It not only elevates mood but also positively impacts the areas of the brain involved in learning and memory. You will also experience improvements in mental performances and cognitive functions.

You may consume dark chocolate with a hot cup of coffee to enhance the effects.

5. Nuts

Nuts are considered the best brain and memory boosters. The elders frequently recommend nuts to the young ones to make their brains work well. Cashew Nuts accelerate mental performance and facilitate memory

On the other hand, nuts such as almond, hazelnut, and walnut can impart neuroprotective effects. Thus, loading up on nuts can be a fruitful step for college students.

A study suggests consuming 1-1.5 ounces of walnuts daily to see improvements in mental and overall health.

Conclusion

Blueberries, nuts, dark chocolate, fatty fish, and green veggies can be excellent boosters of memory and cognition in zealous college-going students.
